How to Add Texture to Create Stunning Images

Ever wondered how to achieve that stunning painterly look? Adding texture to your images is one way to do just that, and can finish them off with a beautiful vintage, weathered look.

Myself and partner, Helen Whittle have put together their top 5 tips when adding texture layers  in Photoshop:

Perfect Placement ...

Place and stretch your texture layer over your entire image to ensure there are no noticeable edges.

Drop the Colour ...

Convert your texture layer to black and white to avoid any texture colours affecting your underlying image tones.

Try different blend modes ...

Play around with different blend modes to see what works with your chosen texture and your image.

Layer more than one ...

Try layering more than one texture over your image and adjust the opacity of each individually if you feel they are too strong.

Flip It ...

Inverting your texture layer can quite often have a surprisingly interesting and varied effect! Invert your texture layer in colour and luminosity by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL/CMD + I.
